Origins of the Norse

Welcome to Abbott’s Inn Norse Tradition 9! We’re so glad you could make it! Do check out the other Abbott’s Inn Norse Tradition groups on other networks. Sorry to have been gone so long, but for some months we had computer issues. Now we both have computers, and our cell phones go on the Internet. Tegwedd prefers to use her computer to go on the Internet. Easier to read. She also thinks going on the Internet may cost extra, and she pays enough for her cell as it is.

Norse mythology is the overall term for the myths, legends, and beliefs about supernatural beings by the Norse people. During the early middle ages and continuing down to the Norse Viking renaissance of the present day, the Norse myths continue to be enjoyed. Norse mythology is the study of the stories told in the Scandinavian countries; Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands during the pre-Christian period. The Germanic peoples which gave rise to the Scandinavian people was but one wave of Indo-European peoples who left Iran between 35 and 40 centuries ago. They also came from Scythia on the steppes. They taught the rest of the world horsemanship. Tegwedd looked up the map of the IE migrations and traced their routes from Iran and Scythia, and saw how they went to Italia, thence to Germania, and Scandinavia.

Most of the existing records of Norse mythology date from the 11th through the 18th centuries. In the 18th to early to mid 19th centuries there was a widespread romantic movement all over Europe, where people explored their cultural heritages. The Germanic and Scandinavian countries were no exception. Research was done into the old sagas, as well as the Eddas. This reminds Tegwedd of a Robert Larson (Terlach) story. A couple of missionaries came to the door. Terlach disappeared into his room and came out in full Viking gear. He thundered in his full baritone voice: “Have you read your Eddas today?” The missionaries fled. Isaac and Stephen nearly hurt themselves laughing.

Most of the existing records on Norse mythology date from the 11th to 18th centuries, having gone through more than 12 centuries of oral transmission in what was then an officially Pagan society. At this point, scholars started to record it, particularly the Eddas and the Heimskringla, by Snorri Sturlson, who believed that the Pagan deities retraced real historical people. Danorium Sax--Grammite where are the Norse gods more euphemized. The Prose or Younger Edda was written in the early 13th century by Snorri Snurlson, who was a leading skald, chieftain, and diplomat in Iceland. It may be thought of primarily as a handbook for aspiring skalds. It contains prose kennings, or compressed metaphors found in poetry. These prose retellings of the Norse gods make the various tales systematic and coherent. The poetic or Elder Edda about 50 years later was committed to writing about 50 years later consists of 29 long poems about gods and Germanic heroes like Sigurd de Volsung or Siegfried Nibelungenlied. Although scholars call it the Edlder Edda, they believe that it was transcribed later than the Younger Edda.

The Germanic peoples wandered all over Europe, even in Italy, where they derived the Runes from the Etruscan alphabet. Finally hey settled in Germania, and some wandered into Scandinavia to become the Norse. The Germanic peoples, with the large scale population growth they were experiencing, went up into what is now Scandinavia in the 7th century BCE. They had trade with the Roman Empire; trading in slaves, gold, salt, and hides. In the 5th century CE, with the slow collapse of the formerly powerful western Roman empire, they took advantage of the ensuing chaos by starting to raid settlements. This is the true start of the Viking era.

Although it was thought to have been composed earlier, the Prose or Younger Edda is thought by the style of the poetry to have been transcribed later than the Poetic or Elder Edda. Besides the these sources, there were surviving sources legends in Norse folklore which can be corelated with other Germanic literature, eg the tale related in Finsburgh and the many allusions to tales in Deur. When several popular references and tales survive, scholars can deduce the tale. Additionally, there are hundreds of Nordic place names named after the gods. A few Runic inscriptions and the Rork Kvinnab amulet, make references to the mythology. There are also several runestones and image stones that depict scenes from Norse mythology such as Thor’r fishing trip. Scenes depicting Sigurd the Dragonslayer, Odin and Sleipnir, Odin being devoured by Firler, and one of the surviving stones from the Hunnestad monument appears to show Hyrrokken riding to Baldir’s funeral. In Denmark, one image stone depicts Loki sporting a dandy-like mustache and his mouth sewn together. Then the British Gorsedd Floss shows several mythological characters.

Cosmology: In Norse mythology there are nine world or Heimar, each joined to the other via Yggdrasil the world ash tree. Asgard the home of the Aesir, Vanaheim world of the Vanir, Midgard the middle world the world of men, Alfheim the world of elves or Alfar. Jotunheim world of giants or Jotun, Svalrtarheim, world of the dwarves, Nifelheim primordial world of ice, Muspelheim primordial world of fire, and Helheim, world of the dead, overseen by the Goddess Hel. Each world also had significant places within it. Odin’s hall was called Walheim or Valhalla where einhaejar who were the souls of the greatest warriors who were chosen by the Valkyrie. These warriors would help to defend the gods during Ragnarok. .

We’re still searching for a house mate. Now if you are willing, able, and ready to to do some hard physical labor like Stephen is doing to get the house and yard in shape, $100 will be taken off your rent until the work is completed, then the rent will go back up to $400. So you will be paying only $300 until the work is completed. .

Our friend Caitlin ni Manannan has people bringing her wood from when they prune their trees in their yards. And we are shortly going to be making rune Rune and Ogham sets. So if you’re local, bring us your branches. They should be at least the thickness of your thumb.

The 75,000 Verizon workers are on strike, and we stand with them. Solidarnosc! as the Poles would say. Verizon management, all Republicans, have made 100 unreasonable demands, and refuse to negotiate, but are paying scabs to cross the picket lines, and work for them. All the workers want, is to keep what they have, a small cost of living increase in wages, their health care, and their pensions. Management wants them to pay $100 per month for health care, while they get it free. If you were thinking of getting a Verizon phone and account, don’t, and do tell them why you aren’t, that you are boycotting them. If you have a Verizon account, close it, and go to another carrier, and tell Verizon why. If you want to piss off Stephen, abuse or oppress the workers. Tell Verizon that you refuse to do business with an employer who oppresses its workers.

Abbott’s Inn International School of Magick is over 40 years old, having been founded in 1970 in Berkeley, CA. It went cybernetic almost 9 years ago. Lizet has been helping us put the school on a more commercial footing, and with her inspiration, Tegwedd has started packaging the classes into manageable packets. Ms. Freeman did a 3rd website for us almost a month ago at http://abbottsinn.wordpress.com. From there, by clicking on two of the graphics, you can go to either of the other two sites: http://abbottsinninternational.com/ and http://abbottsinn.com/ . You can also get to our network http://abbottsinn.ning.com/ . With her help, we also salvaged some things from his old website, including the mission statement: The Abbott’s Inn International School of Magick aims to provide a gentle nurturing environment that promotes education in both the atmosphere and the specific tools of magick. Our research arm is called the Magickal Research Institute or MRI, not to be confused with the medical MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Image, which Tegwedd had on her right ankle about 10 months ago. Stephen and Lizet came up with the name almost 9 years ago. The three of us have become a very effective working team. Stephen has his cell phone, and we are both enjoying learning how to use our cell phones. His cell phone number is 916-467-6393. He’ll have access to the Internet on that phone. He says “I’m not very good at texting because of my glaucoma, so please be gentle with me.” Don’t forget to call 888-611-7982 for all your divination, learning class, and research needs.

Rack & Rune 2

Welcome to Abbott’s Inn Nordic Rune Corner 9! We’re so glad that you could make it. Be sure to check out the other Nordic Rune Corner groups on the other networks. Sorry to have been gone so long, but for a few months, we both had computer issues. Now they’re over with--knock on wood (ask Tegwedd how that started, she’ll tell you.); Tegwedd has a new computer now, and Stephen finally has his laptop back, so we’re going full speed ahead. Stephen wants to do a triforma trifecta on his Twitter page. He wants to do not only the Rune of the Day, Tarot card of the Day, but also the Ogham few of the Day. Few is the proper technical term for for the Ogham staves. Tegwedd got the term from Edred Thorsson’s Book of Ogham.

Back to Runes: Has Tegwedd told you her theory her theory about who had the Runes before Odin? She believes, and Donald Tyson backs her up on this) that women had them, specifically the priestesses of Nerthus and the Norns; and that the blood they were stained with was originally moon blood. Male Runemeisters are pretty doctrinaire and refuse to listen, but they had no cogent answer when she asked them where Odin got the Runes from. He didn’t create the Runes; nowhere in the Havamal does it say he made them. Runes don’t just magickally appear out of nowhere and nothing when you hang yourself on Yggdrasil. He got them from women’s mysteries. So this discussion is about Runology. Three great writers on the Runes are: Nigel Pennick, Edred Thorsson, and Donald Tyson. We each have a number of books on the Runes, One of Tegwedd’s favorite books in Stephen’s library on the Runes is the Little Giant Rune Encyclopedia of Runes. It’s short, but very fat, full of facts about the Runes.

Stephen first encounted the Runes when he was ten years old. His Grandmother Beatrice McCaulley introduced him to the Runes, and he ran with them. Very early on he figured out how to use the Runes together with the Tarot, which at that time, Grandma McCaulley had recently introduced him to. Today he uses four systems together: Runes, Tarot, Ogham, and Tattva, the oracular elemental system of Tibet. We offer to do these long readings with webcam on Yahoo IM and Windows Live Msgr. We’ll also offer later on this month, on our Ning network http://abbottsinn.ning.com, readings on Ning chat, the $32 fee payable to Stephen’s PayPal account at abbotts_inn@yahoo.com.

The knowledge of runology comprises a valuable area of Germanic spiritual and magickal studies and linguistics. The earliest Runic inscriptions date from around 150 CE. The characters generally stopped being used in favor of the Roman alphabet as Christianization took over central Europe in the 8th century until in the 11th century they were only used for special purposes. Until the early 20th century they were used in rural Sweden for decoration purposes and in Runic calendars.

The years for the various known Rune sets are as follows: Elder Futhark 150-800 CE, Anglo-Saxon Futhorc 400-1100 CE, and the Younger Futhark 800-1100CE. The 2 Futharks were used in Scandinavia, that is, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and the Futhorc was used in England. The Rok short branch Runes were Swedish and Norwegian, and the Halsingr Runes. Marcomannic were medieval 1100-1500 CE. Dalecarlian 1500-1800. Then there were the Raetid, no dates given. Old Italic scripts such as the Etruscan alphabet may have given rise to the Runes. Anglo-Frisian Runes 5th to 11th centuries.

Vampires Amongst Us

Welcome to Vampires for Pagans! We’re glad you could make it! This is a brand new group, not a clone, so we shan’t be encouraging you to check out our other groups by that name, but do check out our other vampire groups: Kindred the Embraced and True Blood for Pagans. More will come. We’re happy you’re here to investigate the vamp in all of us. Historywise, there have been vampires in many countries and cultures: Ireland,Britain, Gaul (France) Eastern Europe, Africa, Scandinavia, other Celtic cultures, and even Native Americans had their versions of the vampire. The ancient Greeks had their lamias, the Germans their lichias, Eastern Europe had their Vampyr, and Asia their hungry ghosts. Vampires come in many shapes and sizes and many shades of power. Some vampires use ritual magick. Tegwedd knows one that doesn’t. He distrusts magick in any way, shape or form. That would be Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Clarence, a character in Blood Ties, a series based on Tanya Huuff’s novels. Monday, when the library opens after 2 weeks of being closed for renovations, Tegwedd is going to look up Tanya Huff on their computer catalog, and see if she can get any of her books. Those Canadians, man, they turn out quality stuff. Something about being cooped up inside for those long cold winters must do something to their minds. Others besides Fitzroy did not like magick. Some had direct Pagan origins Others were Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, Shinto, and yes, sad to say, even Christians such as Nicholas Knight of Forever Knight. Many were famous personages of both exoteric and occult history. One of these was the Comte de Saint-Germain, according to the novels of Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. Another was the infamous Vlad Tepesh the Impaler. Paracelsus and even Pythagoras could have been vampires. Tegwedd thinks Doc Holiday was one. Stephen mentioned Jesse James (the outlaw, not the reality show star). There may also be a link with shamanism, since shamans are so involved with spirit magick. There is possibly a link to huna and to two of the several religions of the African Diaspora, Santeria and Umbanda.

As we said before, vampires can come in all shapes and sizes, male, female, music major, and even from the animal kingdom--vampiric dogs and cats. Not all vampires are blood suckers. There are also psychic vampires who drain their victims of life or psychic force. There may be more psychic vampires than blood vampires. Have you ever been to a party, seen someone sitting alone in a room, then when you leave the room, you feel drained as though you were about to pass out and fall down? That person could be a psychic vampire. There are also sexual vampires who suck out your sexual energy. In Tantra, men are taught to reserve their seed because it is felt that women sap the life force of men if they allow themselves to ejaculate. Not all vampires can be equated with evil. If you were a vampire, would you see yourself as evil? You might, if you had a really twisted self-image. You might glory in it. But not necessarily. The concept of such dualism originated with the Persians, and took over Christianity.

To a Pagan, a vampire is not necessarily even supernatural. It is just part of the natural process of evolution, and the food chain. Man, the highest mammal, preys on all the lower animals. What preys on man? Why are we so fascinated with the concept of vampirism? That’s a good question. Tegwedd will have to ask her psychiatrist. Our world seems boring and uneventful. The vampire world is anything but boring or uneventful. Vampirism can be found throughout the arts through films, books, theatre, dance , and music. There are at least five Tarot decks: Stephen has 4 decks, and Tegwedd has 3. They each have Vampire’s Tarot of the Eternal Night, the Tarot of Vampires from Llewellyn,, and Tegwedd has the Bohemian Gothic Tarot. Stephen has the Vampire Tarot and the Gothic Tarot of Vampires. Stephen wants the Bohemian Gothic Tarot, and ordered it from Beer’s Books. The deck is from the Czech Republic. We both enjoy doing readings with our Tarot decks. Tegwedd also has 2 very fat excellent books on vampires that Doc bought for her. One is Vampires: Encounters with the Undead. by David J. Skal, a noted author on the horror film genre and dark fantasy in general. It is full of literature about vampires and featuring vampires, stories ranging in period from the 18th century to 1997. The genre of these stories, at least the earlier ones, is known as Romantic Gothic. The other book about vampires Tegwedd has is the Vampire Book, an encyclopedic volume about vampires in popular culture. The cover features Kiefer Sutherland as the leader of a gang of young vampires in the 1987 film called “The Lost Boys.” The band Korn has some good vampire music. Some people claim that Abraham Lincoln was both a vampire and gay, or at least bisexual. Because of her education, when Tegwedd does research for a novel, she likes to delve into the traditional literature on the subject. This is why she wanted those books.

The deck is published by the Magic [sic] Realist Press, the Baba Group. They have 2 other decks which you may be interested in. We sure are. One is called the Tarot of Prague, the other the Victorian Romantic Tarot. In a way, it makes sense that they would name a deck after Prague. From thee Middle Ages to the Renaissance, until the Commies took over in 1945, Prague was a leading center for intellectuals, and for magick. The Golem came from the Prague Jewish ghetto. Johannes Dee and Edward Talbot Kelly did many alchemical experiments in their struggle to turn base metal into gold during the 1580s. Also during the 3rd Reich, Prague was a leading center for the underground resistance against the Nazis. There is a variant of the Faust stories that took place in Prague. If Tegwedd ever made enough money that she could travel, she would like to visit Prague to view the magickal sights. We will check out the website listed on Tegwedd’s deck, and see if there are any other decks that these people are selling. When Stephen talked about the Bohemian Gothic Tarot to the people at Beer’s Books, they knew all about the company; that’s how together they are, and why Stephen prefers to patronize them, rather than going the easy way out and ordering it from Amazon. He also wants to turn you, dear readers, onto them. Their phone number is 916-442-9475. Their address is 915 S street (that’s the letter, not the direction) Sacramento 95814. If you’re local, stop in. If you buy something before 1 pm, you get 10% off. Email is beersbks@pacbell.net.

There are many movies about vampires. Bram Stoker’s Dracula is perhaps the most romantic of the loot. Then there’s the original Dracula starring Bela Lugosi, the 1979 Dracula starring Frank Langella, When I was first doing my research for Blood of her Fathers, I viewed all the Hammer Dracula films starring Christopher Lee. There is also John Carpenter’s The Vampires, From Dusk Til Dawn 1 & 1, Fright Night 1 & 2, Once Bitten, Dead and Loving It, Moonlight the TV series, the movie 30 Days of Night, the series Forever Knight, Blood Ties, Salem’s Lot, Kindred the Embraced, and Terror at 30,000 Feet, aka Night Flyer or Night Flight, a cunning Stephen King yarn about a vampire pilot who flew from place to place, finding his victims at airports all over the world.

There is much literature about vampires in many cultures from the novels of Tanya Huff to the stories of the lichia in Germany. Vampires have been around us for centuries, maybe even millennia. Stories have been told about them and their predations for that long, first in hushed voices around the fire, then committed to paper and ink. What would you like to see this group cover re: vampires? You members have extraordinary powers. You do not need to be an admin to post. Give us your feedback. And, as always, go to http://abbottsinn.com/ , http://abbottsinninternational.com/ and our ning network http://abbottsinn.ning.com/ and call 1-888-611-7982.
